Pipe Cap are a core type of steel butt-weld fitting. Welded to pipeline ends via butt welding, they act as pressure-rated sealing components at line terminals, permanently closing off pipe runs and blocking media flow.
Standard butt-weld caps feature a domed head with smooth radius transitions, with a weld bevel machined at the end to match the mating pipe. Once welded, they form an integrated sealed assembly with the pipeline. For small-diameter applications, variants with socket-weld or threaded connections are also available.

A: The core distinction lies in disassembly demand. A butt-weld cap creates a permanent welded closure: it has a compact build, low cost and reliable sealing performance, and is ideal for permanently closed pipe runs. A blind flange enables detachable flange-type closure with easy assembly and disassembly, making it suitable for scenarios requiring regular maintenance, pressure testing or temporary plugging.
Q: How to select the wall thickness of a Stainless Steel Pipe Cap?
A: It is generally selected to match the pipe's wall thickness schedule (Schedule number, e.g. Sch10S, Sch40S, Sch80S). The end wall thickness of the pipe cap must not be less than the nominal wall thickness of the connected pipe. For high-pressure and high-temperature services, wall thickness shall be calculated based on design pressure, operating temperature and material allowable stress.
Q: How to choose between 304 and 316L stainless steel pipe caps?
A: 304 stainless steel fits ordinary clean water, atmospheric environments and mildly corrosive conditions. With lower cost, it is the standard general-purpose option. 316L contains molybdenum, which greatly enhances resistance to chloride ions and organic acid corrosion. It is recommended for seawater, chemical media, coastal high-salt spray environments, as well as food and pharmaceutical sanitary-grade applications.
Q: What inspections are required after welding the pipe cap?
A: Routine inspections include visual and dimensional verification, and weld penetrant testing (PT). For high-pressure and hazardous media services, radiographic testing (RT) or ultrasonic testing (UT) shall be supplemented.
