SS Flange Lapping Stub End are purpose-built butt-weld fittings for piping systems, and must be used with matching lap joint flanges (also called loose flanges or backing flanges). Each stub end is a short pipe section with an outward-flared rim on one side. The straight pipe end connects to the pipeline via butt welding, while the flat flared face acts as the sealing surface. The backing flange slips over the outside of the stub end; when bolts are tightened, it compresses the flared face to create a detachable, leak-tight pipe joint. The flange itself never comes into contact with the conveyed medium, and only provides clamping force and structural support.

SS Flange Lapping Stub End serve core practical functions: they enable detachable pipe connections, provide a stable sealing reference face, isolate conveyed process media from the backing flange, and help mitigate thermal stress in piping systems.

FAQ

Q: Can SS Flange Lapping Stub End be used with standard flanges?

A: No - they must be paired with dedicated lap joint flanges. Standard flanges have a mismatched sealing face geometry and cannot form a tight seal against the stub end flare. Lap joint flanges feature a rounded inner transition that fits perfectly with the flare's radius, ensuring even load distribution and reliable sealing.

Q: How to choose between long-pattern and short-pattern lap joint stub ends?

A: Long-pattern (standard) stub ends are the universal choice for most low-to-medium pressure services, and provide ample space for welding operations. Short-pattern stub ends have a reduced length, designed primarily for Class 300+ high-pressure applications, pipelines with extremely tight space constraints, and thin-walled stainless steel light-duty systems.

Q: Are there mandatory requirements for flare thickness?

A: Industry standards specify that the minimum flare thickness must not be less than the pipe's nominal wall thickness to ensure pressure-bearing capacity. For high-pressure service, the flare requires additional thickening to prevent plastic deformation under bolt compression, which would cause seal failure.

Q: What are the common causes of cracking in stainless steel flares?

A: Key causes include excessively thin pipe walls, reduced ductility from excessive material work hardening, undersized forming die radii or overly fast processing speeds, and internal raw material defects such as slag inclusions and microcracks. Qualified products rely on controlled forming processes and solution treatment to retain sufficient ductility.
